Pfizer and BioNTech Produce 90 Percent Effective Covid Vaccine

In an early analysis, drugmaker Pfizer and German partner BioNTech say a Covid-19 vaccine they have manufactured is 90 percent effective, according to CNBC. The news is much better than experts had predicted.

“I think we can see light at the end of the tunnel,” Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr. Albert Bourla said. “I believe this is likely the most significant medical advance in the last 100 years, if you count the impact this will have in public health, global economy.”

He also said the timing could not be better especially with more than 100,000 new daily Covid-19 cases nationwide. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, called the results “extraordinarily good news,” according to CNN.

The vaccine, which requires two doses, will give those vaccinated protection from Covid-19 for 28 days after the first vaccination. It is not known yet the length of time the vaccine will actually be effective.

The analysis evaluated 94 Covid-19 cases that were confirmed among the 43,538 participants of the clinical trial. Fewer than 10 percent of the infected were participants who were given the vaccine, while more than 90 percent of the Covid-19 cases were in those who took a placebo.

The FDA had said it expected any vaccine to be at least 50 percent effective. Former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb stated the vaccine could be available on a limited basis by late December. It may be available to the general public by the third quarter of next year.
