Climate Change Next Door

Climate change news coverage typically shows us melting ice caps, straws in the ocean, and record heat waves, but what may shock us is the ways it’s impacting fishermen in the U.S., particularly in the New England area. When waters warm, fish populations migrate in an effort to find cooler waters. Migrating too far, however, means fishermen who once relied on catching certain types of fish end up with less, which shrinks their income. In the last decade, native cod populations have decreased by 80 percent and flounder has decreased by 50 percent.
